The confusion is real

Novated lease calculators usually answer “how much tax could I save?” This one also asks “do the quote numbers make sense?”

Across Australian finance forums, the recurring problem is not that people cannot find a novated lease calculator. It is that they cannot reconcile the provider's amount financed, rental schedule, interest rate, FBT treatment and payroll deduction. This calculator keeps those layers separate.

“I just can't seem to get all the numbers to line up.”

A user trying to reverse-engineer a quote found the stated rate and the cash flows did not reconcile. The practical questions were: what exactly is financed, what fees are inside it, and what formula produced the rate?

“Tax saving” is not the same as net saving.

Independent community calculators repeatedly warn that a headline tax-saving figure can rise when finance costs rise. The useful comparison is finance cost, residual and after-tax cash impact together.

See the EV/ICE calculator discussion
Why are there fewer finance rentals than months in the lease?

Deferred commencement structures can mean the contractual finance schedule does not match the nominal lease term or the number of payroll cycles. Naively assuming 36 or 60 equal rentals can produce the wrong implied rate.

See a payment-timing discussion
Why does an EV quote look so different to a petrol or hybrid quote?

For a currently eligible EV, the FBT exemption can allow the entered package costs to be funded pre-tax. A taxable car commonly uses ECM, creating a post-tax contribution. Comparing the two with one flat “tax rate” is not enough.

See the EV cost discussion
“None of the calculators wanted to show you the ‘big picture’.”

That comment gets to the design problem. A useful result needs the finance cost, tax/GST effect, FBT treatment, residual and take-home-pay impact on the same screen rather than one attractive savings number.

A detailed spreadsheet can still be hard to map to your own quote.

Community users have described comprehensive models as useful but difficult to apply to their own situation. This page keeps the detailed settings available, but starts with the fields people can actually find on a quote.

How to calculate the interest rate on a novated lease

A lease quote can show a vehicle price, amount financed, regular rental and end-of-term residual without making the finance rate easy to infer. The rate cannot be reconstructed reliably by dividing a simple “total interest” number by principal and years because the balance is declining and a residual remains outstanding at maturity.

This calculator discounts each contractual finance rental and the residual back to settlement. In rate mode it finds the periodic rate that makes those cash flows equal the amount financed, then converts that periodic rate to a nominal annual rate. In rental mode it uses the same cash-flow schedule to solve the required rental from a stated nominal rate.

Payment timing matters. A 36-month lease does not automatically mean 36 monthly finance rentals. If your quote contains 34 monthly rentals beginning in period 2, enter exactly that schedule. The residual can still fall due at month 36.

What does “amount financed” mean?

The amount financed is the finance principal used in the lease cash-flow calculation. It can differ from the vehicle's drive-away price because GST credits or adjustments, establishment fees, PPSR fees and other financed amounts may be treated separately.

For 2026–27, the ATO states that the maximum GST credit for a car subject to the car-limit restriction is $6,353. The calculator applies that vehicle-credit cap by default, then separately estimates GST on financed fee inputs. If your quote supplies an exact settlement GST adjustment or amount financed, use the advanced override instead of relying on the default reconstruction.

Why does GST matter?

A quote may mix amounts inclusive and exclusive of GST. The finance principal may reflect a recoverable GST adjustment, the residual shown to the employee may be GST-inclusive, and the quoted contractual lease cost may itself be shown including GST. If those bases are mixed when reverse-engineering the quote, the implied rate can be materially wrong.

The calculator therefore displays residual including and excluding GST, lets an advanced user override the quote-specific GST treatment, and asks whether a quoted rental includes GST before solving backwards for the finance rate.

Quote audit rule: when the financier or salary packaging provider gives you an exact “amount financed”, use that figure rather than trying to reconstruct it from tax assumptions.

ATO residual values by lease term

The commonly applied car residual percentages below follow the ATO residual-value methodology for a car with an eight-year effective life. They are useful defaults for analysing a conventional 1–5 year motor-vehicle finance lease. They should be understood as minimum residual guidance under the ATO methodology, not as a statement that every novated lease document must use exactly these figures in every circumstance.

Lease termCommon minimum residual
12 months65.63%
24 months56.25%
36 months46.88%
48 months37.50%
60 months28.13%

Read the residual-value guide.

Monthly lease rental vs fortnightly payroll deduction

The contractual finance rental and the amount deducted from your pay can be different numbers. A salary packaging deduction may combine finance, running-cost budgets, administration and tax treatment, or it may spread contractual rentals across a different number of payroll cycles.

For a finance-only conversion, this calculator takes total contractual rentals over the nominal term and divides that total across the selected payroll cycles. It does not pretend the resulting payroll equivalent is itself a contractual lease rental.

See the detailed worked explanation.

Nominal rate vs effective annual rate

The nominal annual rate is the periodic finance rate multiplied by the number of finance periods per year. For monthly calculations, a 0.75% monthly rate corresponds to 9.00% nominal p.a.

The effective annual rate includes the effect of compounding: (1 + periodic rate)periods/year − 1.

The effective annual rate shown here is not labelled a statutory comparison rate. Fees and regulatory comparison-rate rules are a separate question.

BYO / self-managed finance

Want to source your own novated lease finance?

Some employer salary packaging programs may allow separately arranged vehicle finance or a BYO/self-managed structure while the employer continues using its approved salary packaging administrator. The parties and documents still need to work together, and availability depends on the employer, salary packaging provider, finance approval and their process.

This can be worth investigating if you already have a salary packaging provider through work but want to compare the finance component independently.

Ask About BYO Finance

Keep the roles separate

Employer: participates in the novation and payroll arrangement.

Salary packaging administrator: may manage deductions, budgets and ongoing administration.

Finance provider: provides the vehicle lease finance.

Vehicle supplier: supplies the car.

A self-managed/BYO pathway can sometimes separate the finance and vehicle-sourcing roles from the employer's preferred administrator. It is not universally available.

How to compare two novated lease quotes properly

Start by putting both quotes on the same finance basis. Compare the same vehicle price, nominal term, amount financed, residual basis, actual number of rentals, rental timing and finance fees. Then compare running-cost budgets and administration separately. A lower take-home-pay estimate does not by itself prove the finance component is cheaper.

  • Amount financed and any GST adjustment
  • Nominal annual finance rate and payment frequency
  • Number and timing of contractual finance rentals
  • Residual including GST and residual excluding GST
  • Establishment, PPSR and finance-related fees
  • Salary packaging administration charges
  • Running-cost assumptions and annual kilometres
  • Early termination or change-of-employer treatment

Worked examples

1. Known rate → lease rental. Enter the amount financed, term, residual and a nominal annual rate. The calculator discounts the residual and solves the regular contractual rental that balances the finance cash flows.
2. Known rental → implied rate. Enter the quoted rental instead of the rate. The numerical solver finds the periodic rate whose discounted rentals and residual equal the finance principal.
3. Fictional 36-month lease with 34 monthly rentals. A $70,000 vehicle with $64,000 financed, 34 monthly rentals of $1,343.73 beginning in period 2, and a $32,816 residual including GST at month 36 produces an implied nominal rate of approximately 7.98% p.a. The total contractual rentals are $45,686.82. Spread as a finance-only equivalent across the 36-month term, that is about $1,269.08 per month or $585.73 per fortnight. This is an illustrative mathematical example, not a lender quote.
4. Compare another rate. After a result, enter a comparison rate to see what the same cash-flow structure would imply for the contractual rental. The tool does not claim GPS Finance can obtain that rate.
5. Three-year vs five-year residual. A longer lease generally uses a lower minimum residual percentage, so changing term affects both the amount repaid through rentals and the amount remaining at the end.

What FBT changes in the calculation

This is the part the previous version of this calculator did not model properly. FBT treatment changes the salary-package cash flow, so an eligible EV and a taxable petrol/diesel/hybrid should not be run through the same flat tax-savings formula.

Eligible battery EV / hydrogen vehicle

Under the current electric-car exemption, an eligible vehicle can be exempt from FBT. The calculator therefore models the entered finance and running-cost package as pre-tax, subject to the eligibility assumptions. The 2026–27 fuel-efficient LCT threshold is $91,661.

Petrol, diesel and non-plug-in hybrid

The calculator uses a transparent Employee Contribution Method estimate: 20% statutory car taxable value, with a post-tax employee contribution used to reduce that value. Enter the exact FBT base value from the quote when available.

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)

New PHEV arrangements generally stopped qualifying for the electric-car FBT exemption from 1 April 2025. A separate transitional option is available only where the ATO's transitional conditions genuinely apply.

Reportable fringe benefit

An eligible EV can be FBT-exempt and still create a reportable fringe benefits amount. The calculator shows an indicative figure because reportable benefits can affect adjusted-income tests even though the employee does not pay FBT directly.

Announced future EV changes: the Government announced in May 2026 that the current full EV discount continues to the end of March 2027, with different treatment from April 2027. It also stated existing leases will not be impacted. This calculator models the current 2026 treatment for a lease entered now; it does not retroactively apply the announced future rules. Novated lease calculator FAQs

What is a good interest rate for a novated lease?

There is no universal “good” rate. Pricing can vary with borrower profile, vehicle, financier, term and market conditions. Compare rates only after matching the amount financed, residual, payment schedule and finance fees.

Do novated leases have interest rates?

The vehicle finance component has a finance rate even when a salary packaging quote emphasises a weekly or fortnightly change in take-home pay rather than the nominal annual rate.

How do I calculate the rate from a monthly lease payment?

You need the amount financed, contractual rental, payment count and timing, and residual. The correct calculation solves the discounted cash flows; simple total-interest division does not correctly model an amortising lease with a residual.

My quote says the lease cost includes GST. What should I enter?

Enter the quoted rental and choose “Yes — rental includes GST”. The calculator converts it to the ex-GST finance rental before solving the implied rate, while still showing both figures in the result. Mixing a GST-inclusive rental with an ex-GST amount financed or residual can materially distort the implied rate.

What is the residual on a 3-year novated lease?

For a standard car using the commonly applied eight-year ATO methodology, the 36-month minimum residual percentage is 46.88%. Check the actual contract and quote assumptions.

What is the residual on a 5-year novated lease?

The commonly applied 60-month minimum residual percentage is 28.13% for the standard car methodology referenced above.

Is GST charged on the residual?

Novated lease quotes commonly show an employee end-of-term residual inclusive of GST, while finance mathematics may use the residual excluding GST. Check the contract's exact treatment rather than assuming every displayed number is on the same GST basis.

Why can the amount financed be lower than the drive-away price?

A recoverable GST adjustment can reduce the finance principal. Conversely, financed establishment, PPSR or other fees can increase it. The exact treatment is quote-specific.

Is lease rental the same as my payroll deduction?

Not necessarily. Payroll deductions can be on a different frequency and can include running-cost budgets, administration and tax treatment in addition to vehicle finance.

Can a 36-month lease have 34 monthly rentals?

Yes, a quote can use a payment schedule that differs from the nominal month count because of commencement and first-payment timing. The calculator allows the actual payment count and first rental period to be entered separately.

Does the residual earn interest?

Economically, the residual is a future cash flow that remains outstanding until maturity, so its timing is part of the discounted-cash-flow calculation. Avoid reducing the question to a simple yes/no without considering the contract and finance methodology.

Can I negotiate or compare the finance rate?

You can ask for the nominal finance rate and compare another quote on equivalent cash-flow assumptions. Whether another financier can offer a different rate depends on the transaction and credit assessment.

Can I use my own finance with a novated lease?

Some employer/provider programs may allow separately sourced finance or a BYO/self-managed structure. The employer, administrator and finance documentation must permit it.

What is a self-managed novated lease?

The term commonly describes an arrangement where finance and sometimes vehicle sourcing are organised separately from the employer's salary packaging administrator. Terminology and processes differ by provider.

Can GPS Finance review an existing quote?

Yes. You can submit the core finance numbers for a second opinion and explore whether a standard or BYO/self-managed finance pathway may be available. This does not guarantee a lower rate or approval.

How does the calculator treat an eligible EV differently?

For a currently eligible battery-electric or hydrogen vehicle under the 2026 rules, the calculator applies the FBT-exempt treatment and does not calculate a post-tax ECM contribution. It still shows an indicative reportable fringe benefits amount and warns that adjusted-income consequences are separate from FBT payable.

How does the calculator treat petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles?

It uses a transparent ECM estimate under the statutory car method: 20% of the FBT base value is the starting annual taxable value, and an employee post-tax contribution is used to reduce that taxable value. Real employer/provider calculations can differ because of availability days, exact base value, GST and administration.

Why is “tax + GST benefit” not the same as net saving?

Because you still pay finance costs, running costs and the residual. A higher finance cost can even create a larger tax deduction. The calculator therefore shows the tax/GST benefit separately from the finance rate and total finance charge.

Does using this calculator affect my credit score?

No. The calculator itself does not perform a credit enquiry. A later formal lender application may involve a credit check after you choose to proceed and give the required consent.
