Personal loan guide

Personal Loan Document Checklist

Prepare the common information a lender may need for a personal loan assessment. The exact documents depend on your income type, loan purpose, existing commitments and the lender selected.

Initial discussion and assessment only. A formal lender enquiry occurs only with your consent.

  • Broker-led lender comparison
  • Formal lender application only with your consent
1 · Identity

Have your legal and contact details ready

Use your current legal name, date of birth, residential address and contact details. A lender may request acceptable identity documents and address history as part of verification.

2 · Income

Show how your income is earned

Income evidence differs by applicant. Employees, contractors, casual workers and self-employed applicants can require different supporting information, and lender policies are not identical.

  • Current employment and income details
  • Recent evidence of salary, wages or other regular income where requested
  • History or supporting information for variable income if needed
  • Business or tax information for self-employed applicants where the selected lender requires it
3 · Expenses and debts

Build an accurate household budget

A lender looks at the new loan alongside existing commitments and normal living costs. Prepare realistic figures rather than trying to make the budget fit a target repayment.

  • Rent, mortgage or board
  • Regular household and living expenses
  • Personal loans, car loans and other instalment debts
  • Credit-card limits and balances
  • Other regular credit commitments or repayments
4 · Purpose

Be clear about what the loan is for

The purpose and amount should be clear and supportable. Depending on the purpose and lender, you may be asked for quotes, payout figures or other documents that show how the funds will be used.

Before submission

Tell the broker about anything that could change lender fit

Disclose recent job changes, past credit issues, previous declines, unusual income, temporary residency or other material circumstances before a lender is selected. A complete picture makes it easier to decide whether a formal application is sensible.

How it works

From document pack to a cleaner assessment

Prepare the facts first, then choose the lender pathway.

1

Gather the basics

Collect identity, income, commitments and purpose information that is already available.

2

Explain the context

Flag anything unusual, including variable income, credit issues or a previous decline.

3

Test lender fit

Use the real facts of the application to narrow the lender options before formal submission.

4

Complete lender-specific evidence

Provide any additional documents requested for the selected application pathway.

Frequently asked questions

Questions personal-loan applicants ask about documents

No. The evidence varies with the lender, your income type, loan purpose, existing commitments and the facts of the application. The checklist covers common preparation items.

Have the current balances, limits and repayments for the debts you want to consolidate. Compare the new total cost as well as the monthly repayment.

A broker discussion does not itself require a formal lender application. A lender credit enquiry should occur only if you decide to proceed and give consent.
