Quick answer: Talking to a broker does not automatically mean a formal lender credit enquiry has been made. A broker may be able to discuss policy or obtain indicative information first. A formal lender application, however, can create a credit enquiry. Ask exactly what will happen before giving consent to submit.
The real versions of the question were closer to:
- “I've already been declined twice — can a broker tell me my options without another hit?”
- “The broker says they can estimate a rate without an enquiry. When does the hard check happen?”
- “If I apply myself and get it wrong a few times, does that make the next application worse?”
Three stages often get confused
Conversation / fact find
You explain:
- income;
- debts;
- credit issues;
- purpose;
- amount.
This is not itself a lender application.
Policy / indicative assessment
A broker may use lender policy, BDM discussion or an indicative tool.
Whether a credit bureau is accessed depends on the process and consent.
Ask.
Formal lender application
This is the point most likely to create the credit enquiry recorded on your report.
OAIC says credit enquiries can include the type and amount of credit sought and remain on the report for five years.
Why this matters after declines
If the first lender declined because:
- fixed-term employment;
- paid default;
- visa;
- loan amount;
- debt consolidation policy;
submitting the same file to another lender with the same rule creates no value.
The broker should identify what is actually different about the next lender.
Consent and transparency
Ask the broker:
- Are you obtaining my credit report now?
- Will this be visible as an enquiry?
- Which lender will be submitted?
- Can we establish basic policy fit before submission?
- What fee is payable if I do not proceed?
A broker cannot guarantee no enquiry forever
If you proceed to formal credit, the lender generally needs to assess the application.
The aim is not “never create an enquiry”.
It is create only useful, intentional enquiries.
General information only. Approval, pricing, fees and eligibility depend on the lender, borrower circumstances and contract.
Frequently asked questions
Does talking to a broker create a credit enquiry?
Not automatically. It depends on whether a credit report/lender application is accessed at that stage.
Can a broker quote a rate without a hard enquiry?
Some lenders/tools may provide indicative information; ask what process is being used.
When does the formal enquiry happen?
Usually when a lender accesses the credit report in connection with a formal application.
How long does an enquiry remain?
OAIC says five years.
Is one enquiry bad?
A normal intentional application is not the same as a burst of repeated applications; context matters.
